Eager Beaver

Class secretary and reunion committee member Henry “Hank” McCarl ’62, one of two people
who led the Class of 1962 into Killian Court
for commencement, shows his MIT spirit in a
beaver cap and his new red jacket. In her final
commencement as president of MIT, Susan Hockfield praised the faculty (“there are no more brilliant, provocative, or inspiring companions
on the road to truth and understanding”) and observed that a sense of service and a sense of community are both required to transform raw
talent into something of true value. After remarking that “the only thing conventional wisdom is good for is target practice,” she sent the Institute’s 2,484 newest alumni forth to “put MIT’s spirit and principles to work around the globe.”
