In an astonishing case with world-wide implications, the Canadian Supreme Court has ruled (in a 5:4 opinion) a Canadian farmer violated Monsanto’s patent rights when he planted seeds containing Monsanto’s Roundup Ready genes. The farmer, Percy Schmeiser, never bought Monsanto’s seeds. He says that the seeds must have blown onto his land or that other farmer’s genetically-modified crops must have cross-pollinated with his own.
