You knew that the economics of e-mail were tilted in favor of spammers. Want to know how bad the situation is? According to a report in The Register, sending out junk e-mail is so cheap that spammers can make a “lucrative living even though only 50 in every million people respond.” That certainly puts the formidable task of e-mail filtering software in perspective. The 0.005% figure was derived by Andrew Leung of the Canadian telecommunications company Telus, who wrote a cogent paper about spam.
