Scientists at University of Maine’s School of Marine Scientists have figured out a clever technique for estimating how much photosynthesis phytoplankton actually engage in. Accurate measurements of this oceanographic productivity have so far elluded most experimenters. The new approach looks at the color (optical backscattering) of the oceans as measured by orbiting satellites.
