In science and technology news from yesterday’s election, California’s Proposition 71–the stem cell initiative–passed handily, 59-41 percent. Those moving trucks you’ll be seeing are the relocations of every stem cell scientist on the planet moving to stem cell mecca, and it sets up an interesting dynamic between California and the Bush administration on the issue. Bans on genetically modified crops were defeated in 3 out of 4 California counties, passing only in suburban Marin County just across the Golden Gate bridge from San Francisco. GM opponents aren’t likely to give up, though, on their quixotic if misguided attempt to ban the crops.
