Daily Kos has an in-depth analysis of the typography of the recently-uncovered Bush Vietnam-era memos, explaining that even though the document is set in Times New Roman with a proportional font that looks like it was created with a copy of Microsoft Word, it was probably created in 1972 with an IBM Executive Typewriter that also set proportional type in Times New Roman.
Those IBM Executive Typewriters were marketed heavily to government agencies. I used one, once, and was super-impressed with the quality. The only problem with them was that if you made a mistake and didn’t catch it immediately, you had to go back and wipe out the whole line.
Don’t settle for half the story.
