The class of 2015’s convocation never happened, upstaged by the arrival of Hurricane Irene. So when President Reif addressed the class at commencement this year, he officially welcomed them to MIT before sending them off into the world. He shared a quote from Tom Scholz ’69 of the rock band Boston that was to have been in the cancelled convocation speech: “MIT left me with the confidence to attempt innovation … and the desire to learn.” Reif then charged all the graduates to “hack the world” to make it more like MIT. “Find your calling. Solve the unsolvable. Invent the future. Take the high road.”
