An Emergency Pizza Button

What took so long?

  • March 30, 2012

I know I’ve said this before, but this time I mean it. This may be the best idea ever.

I’ve covered life-altering, even life-saving, technology on this blog, time after time, day after day. And maybe it’s just that I’m feeling charitable, or maybe it’s just that I bumped my head earlier, or maybe it’s just that I’m very, very hungry. But there are few gadgets I’ve wanted more than this: an emergency pizza button.

Watch this video, now, please.

My only complaint about that video is that the music undersells how dramatic this development really is.

Before you get too excited, know that Red Tomato Pizza is, alas, a Dubai-based pizzeria; were I to place an order from here in Brooklyn, I hardly imagine it would arrive within the proverbial 30 minutes.

Now, of course, the technology actually contained within this advice is outrageously simple. Explains Mashable, the VIP Pizza Magnet “ is preset to order a pizza online and is connected to the Internet via the Bluetooth connection on a smartphone.” A text confirms your order, which you can tweak away from your default setting by logging online. Impulse buys of pizza delivery are certainly possible stateside–exhibit A: the Domino’s app–but we hardly have anything so delightfully cheeky and downright easy as Red Tomato’s offering.

It’s a brilliant marketing ploy, of course, more than it is a brilliant instantiation of technology. But boy, do I want one.

Imagine how much time this could save you. Or depending on how hungry you are, don’t just imagine it–test it. I called my local pizza place in the middle of writing this post. I was put on hold, and my simple order wound up taking five minutes and several seconds to make.

Wasted minutes or no, I sure am looking forward to that pizza. But I’d be even happier if all it’d taken was the press of a button. American pizzerias, are you listening?
