Sony will let its sophisticated Clie line of PDAs die quietly in U.S. markets, with no plans to replenish the brand after the five current models sell out, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Sony is apparently reacting to the shift in consumer interest from handheld organizers to multi-purpose cell phones that include digital cameras, web browsing, instant messaging, organizer software, and other computing capabilities. The move will be a big blow for PalmSource, which counted Sony as one of the biggest licensees of its Palm operating system for PDAs.
