News Reporter

Position Overview: 

The Download writer/news reporter’s role will be formed of two halves. Mornings will comprise writing and compiling The Download, MIT TR’s most important newsletter. In the afternoon the news reporter will act as a general assignment reporter, pitching, reporting and writing news stories across all of Technology Review’s core beats. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**):

Write the daily Download newsletter 

The newsletter writer must find ways to promote our own stories in the newsletter in a way that makes them a fun standalone read, but that also drives engagement and brings people back to the site. Every day, the reporter will find the most engaging, useful, informative and must-read stories about technology on the internet and compile them in a list that is packed full of fun and voice. The writer will be respsible for making sure the high standard of the Download are maintained—and that it goes out in a timely manner every morning. They will work with the news editor to come up with ways to improve, refresh and hone the newsletter. 

Act as a general assignment news reporter 

When not working on the Download, the writer will be expected to work across all TR’s beats, writing short news stories and anlaysis as required. They will be expected to show a high level of initiative. They will pitch ideas for stories and work on stories that they have been assigned. They will be expected to develop their ability to write features and long-form. 

Other journalism 

The writer may also get the opportunity to get involved in our podcasts and speak at our events, helping to moderate sessions. 

Supervision Received: The director will report to the news editor and editorial director, digital. They will work alongside colleagues in other beats.

Education and Experience:


The role will require at least 2 years of experience in science/technology journalism. 

Bachelor's degree in a related field required. 


UK or Europe-based applicants preferred.
