Human Resources Manager

MIT Technology Review (www.technologyreview.com) seeks an HR Manager to support its growing business. This is a hands-on role focusing on hiring, employee relations, development, and training with an emphasis on supporting MIT TR’s day-to-day human resource needs. The HR Manager will prioritize and respond to hiring needs, coordinating closely with hiring managers to simultaneously promote jobs as well as effectively facilitate the hiring process. He/she will serve as an in-house resource for staff, contributing to the inclusive and creative culture of MIT Technology Review.

The HR Manager is one of MIT Technology Review’s primary contacts with the Institute, through the HR and Payroll departments. He/she will liaise with MIT to strengthen and develop our relationships and to keep our staff connected and informed.

Major responsibilities

  • Manage cost-effective, full cycle recruitment process, working with hiring managers and colleagues in MIT HR to attract and hire exceptional employees for MIT TR. This requires knowledge of modern recruitment channels and how to optimize them eg LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and others
  • Working with hiring managers, ensure accurate job descriptions are maintained for all employees, and, with input from MIT Central Compensation and HR, that all positions are appropriately classified and that compensation is fair and equitable
  • Ensure successful onboarding of staff through collaboration with hiring manager, office management, IT, MIT benefits, and other appropriate staff
  • Work closely with managers and staff to handle employee relations situations and with MIT Central HR to interpret and apply policy and deal with formal complaints and other issues as they arise
  • Conceive and implement training and development activities at the direction of the CEO
  • Maintain all HR transactions and recordkeeping, including job descriptions, benefits administration, hires, changes, promotions, terminations, reclassifications, leaves, payments, student hiring, payroll, reporting, timekeeping, and alternative work schedules
  • Work closely with the finance team to review and forecast salary budgets
  • Coordinate MIT TR performance management process with managers, their employees and MIT Central HR. When appropriate, facilitate discussions between managers and employees to support changes in roles and responsibilities, work flow improvements or to discuss issues or concerns, always encouraging a positive resolution
  • Supervise administration of employee benefits. Using MIT on-line forms, approve and process weekly support staff and student payroll and tracking of administrative staff vacation time
  • Provide input to office management functions including processes, space planning, safety, security, archives, parking, filing, and contracts that increase efficiency of operations

Minimum qualifications required

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five years of HR experience
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state employment laws and current Human Resources content, principles, practices, and trends
  • Ability to effectively handle complex and sensitive employee relations issues
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong personal characteristics of initiative, integrity, and creativity
  • Creative, flexible problem-solver
  • Ability and preference for working in highly creative and collaborative environment
  • Familiarity with SAP and MIT systems and processes preferred
