It’s an exciting day for us at TechnologyReview.com. To coincide with the redesign of Technology Review, the Web team has been working up some changes of our own. And while you won’t normally be subjected to essays from me – I promise, we thought it was important to talk about what is happening on the site.
First and foremost, our mission hasn’t changed. We will still bring you smart stories about how technology is shaping the future of our personal, business, and social lives.
A top priority for the entire editorial department is creating multimedia stories that expand on the the world-class writing in our magazine.
But the most obvious site change is its look and feel. We owe that to senior graphic designer Matthew Bouchard, who spent long hours creating mock-ups for our ever-changing needs and never once complained about our inability to speak graphically.
His work was then masterfully turned into the site you now see by senior web architect David Neuman and assistant Web architect Eben Bathalon, who both worked miracles with the code in a very short timeframe.
Moving forward, the editorial content will be filled out by our talented pool of reporters who are located around the world, always searching for the next big thing.
Here’s a look at some of the new features we’ll have on the site.
The Stories – We will continue to tell big stories about technology, but moving forward, we will do that with words, pictures, videos, and interactive graphics.
The Notebook – Oftentimes, the smart information nuggets don’t make it into our stories. With this new feature, writers will have the ability to share thoughts, links, and other materials that didn’t quite fit their piece. Check out my notebook to the right.
The Take – The editorial team will post the most relevant wire stories about technology. Alongside each will be our take on why that story is important, as well as related links for further exploration.
RSS Feeds – Technology has exploded throughout our culture, and our belief is that readers are best served by presenting a variety of coverage. Along the bottom of the site, readers will get a snapshot of the daily news from top news organizations.
Keywords – Each month, the editorial team will create Web-only, graphical story components and mini-features based upon stories from the magazine. Readers can now jump right to these by simply typing one of the keywords into our search engine. Then click “keyword.”
Interactive Graphics – Our graphic designers will create slideshows, photo stories, illustrations, along with embedded charts and graphs that will extend, and update, our print stories.
Over the ensuing months, we will turn the Technology Review website into a destination for busy professionals looking for everything from a snapshot of the day’s news to in-depth stories about emerging technologies.
There will be more changes on the way, and we look forward to hearing about what you would like to see.
