Things are getting even more interesting over at Yahoo. The company said on Monday that Google executive Marissa Mayer will become its latest CEO, effective Tuesday—a move reminiscent of the one her former colleague, Tim Armstrong, made in 2009 when he left his post as a Google ad executive to take the top spot at the struggling AOL.
If you haven’t been following the recent drama down in Sunnyvale, Mayer is taking the reins after the departure of Scott Thompson, PayPal’s former head, who resigned in May over a scandal involving incorrect information on his resume.
Thompson was named in an effort to revitalize the company, which has floundered in recent years as arch-rival Google has thrived.
Mayer, who had been at Google for 13 years, was the search giant’s vice president of local, maps, and location services—responsible for products like Google Maps, Google Earth, and Street View.
In this article on The New York Times’ DealBook blog, Mayer says she wants to “get focused on creating a really great user experiences” and bring in more Silicon Valley talent.
