Ed Frauenheim’s story in CNET reveals that Maxtor has come up with a way for making perpendicular magnetic recording cost-effective. This allows them to increase the amount of storage on a typical 3.5” disk platter from 80GB to 175GB.

That’s a lot of storage.

People seem to think that the amount of disk space that a disk can handle is destined to increase every year like some law of physics, but in fact there are real limits on just how big disks can get (or how fast computers can go…)

Fortunately, we won’t need to deal with those limits for a few more years, thanks to this new development.
