At Intel Research Day, the company demonstrated some of its silicon photonics technology for the first time. The goal of this work is to speed data transfer by replacing today’s electrical wiring with faster, more efficient fiber-optic connections.
Carson Darling and Thomas Lipoma, who cofounded Nyx Devices with Pablo Bello, and neurologist Matt Bianchi, demonstrate the Somnus sleep shirt. The nightshirt is embedded with fabric electronics to monitor the wearer’s breathing patterns. A small chip worn in a pocket of the shirt processes that data to determine phase of sleep, such as REM sleep (when we dream), light sleep or deep sleep.
The youngest of the space shuttles blasted off from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida at 8:56 AM EDT on May 16. It is headed to the International Space Station for its final 16-day mission.
