TR35 2008 PDF Portfolio FAQ

Technology Review is proud to present 2008's TR35 winners in Adobe's newest version of Portable Document Format (PDF). The profiles were created in Adobe Acrobat 9 and are viewable in the free Adobe Reader 9 reader. Read about each TR35 winner, view his or her photos, see videos about them, and even study related documents such as infographics explaining their innovations--all in one multimedia PDF portfolio. Acrobat 9 offers you a new way to meet our winners--including our Innovator and Humanitarian of the Year--in a rich, portable format.

Why do I need Adobe Reader 9?
The most current version of Adobe Reader 9 will give you the best viewing experience; you will need to download the Adobe Reader 9 software to your computer. This software is free and available from Adobe's website; click here to begin the download and installation process.

I don’t want to install new software. Can I still view the 2008 TR35?
You will be able to read about our winners and view their photos in earlier versions of Acrobat, but to see the videos, charts, or other additional documents in the Portfolio view, you will have to download Acrobat 9. You can also access the 2008 TR35 winner profiles on Technology Review’s TR35 Homepage.  Here, too, while our Web-based profiles allow you to read about our winners and view their photos, they do not include videos, charts, or other additional documents.

I can't get the software to install correctly. Help!
If you're having difficulty downloading or installing Adobe Reader 9 on your computer, please visit Adobe’s Support & Customer Service website.  If you've successfully launched a Technology Review 2008 TR35 PDF Portfolio and need help navigating to the specific content you seek, please see "How do I navigate a 2008 TR35 PDF Portfolio?" below.

Should I download the online or full versions of the PDFs?
Our online versions have been designed to display right in your favorite Web browser. They are lightweight and require Internet access when you view them. If you're only planning on viewing our 2008 TR35 profiles while you're online, these smaller PDFs offer quicker downloads while presenting the same high-quality text, photos, and videos.

If you'd like to take our profiles "to go" and plan on viewing them while you're not connected to the Internet, download the full versions. They will take longer to download, but you can view them anytime.

How do I navigate a 2008 TR35 PDF Portfolio?
Adobe Acrobat 9 offers several new features that have been utilized in the creation of our 2008 TR35 PDF presentations. We've included a few sample photos and short descriptions below to orient you.

1. The PDF Portfolio
When you first launch one of our TR35 winner profiles, you'll notice that all the content has been organized into a three-dimensional carousel. Each graphic in the carousel represents a document that will tell you about the winner, show you a video, or perhaps display a technical document. Together these documents represent the entire "Portfolio" for the TR35 winner. When the carousel first appears, you can press the white arrows in the left and right margins to "scroll" between documents; you may also click on the small yellow pagination icons at the bottom of the screen to rapidly move to one of the documents. When you're ready to view a document, click on its thumbnail in the center of the screen. If you happen to be viewing one of the documents and wish to navigate to another document on the carousel, you may utilize the small boxed arrows to the top left of the screen.

2. Navigating stories

Each TR35 winner portfolio includes a descriptive document of the winner and his or her innovation. These documents can occasionally span multiple pages. To move between pages, use the large gray arrows beneath the body text.

3. Playing multimedia

Many of our TR35 winner portfolios include slide shows and videos, distinguished by a gray "play" icon in the lower left. To move through a slide show, click on the gray-and-white arrows in the lower right of the screen. To watch a video, simply click the "play" icon. To fast-forward, rewind, or pause the video, hover your mouse directly over the video window.
