Both of these images show the protein skeleton of a mammalian cell. The one on the right was taken with a conventional microscope; the one on the left was taken with the new high-resolution microscope, and it shows fine structures. Called the cytoskeleton, this structure allows cells to move, plays a role in apportioning cell parts during division, and is critical to maintaining cell shape.
