Carlos Prieto and Yo-Yo Ma first met in 1983 at a tribute for their cello teacher, Leonard Rose. In this June 2007 photo, the two cellists were in Mexico City to perform Suite for Two Cellos, which Mexican composer Samuel Zyman wrote for them. The piece came about after Ma and Prieto had been playing duos on their Stradivari cellos at Prieto's house in 1993. Ma suggested leaving their cellos out of their cases to allow romantic sparks to fly between them while the cellists lunched. Nine months later, Prieto saw Ma premiere a new work by John Harbison at MIT. Since no baby Strads had appeared, Ma urged Prieto to commission a piece for the two instruments instead.
