Six hours after the mice were fear-conditioned, the green-glowing glutamate receptor has made its way to the synapses where neurons connect with one another. Although individual synapses are not visible at this resolution, finer-scale imaging showed that the protein moved preferentially to those synapses formed by so-called mushroom spines.
