
A new spectrometer with a spatial resolution of 20 meters per pixel is being used to map the minerals on the surface of Mars. The instrument can read 544 wavelengths of light. The amount of energy at each wavelength is plotted, and an image is constructed. The image at left is of the West Chandor Chasm on Mars, one of the proposed landing sites for the Mars Science Laboratory. An enhanced color view shows the presence of hydrated (water-containing) minerals.
