Cold cables: This animation shows the concept for a more-secure power grid in New York City. In a $39 million program funded by the Department of Homeland Security, American Superconductor and Con Edison hope to connect two Manhattan power substations with high-temperature superconductor cables. This will allow each substation to substitute for the other and serve customers if one substation fails. The high-temperature superconductor cables are suitable for the limited space under Manhattan streets: they are smaller than copper cables, and they can automatically resist power surges associated with system faults.
