George Smoot ’66, PhD ’70, A Physics Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, co-led the research team behind NASA’s COBE satellite, which made the first quantitative measurements of the initial conditions of the universe. He shares the 2006 Nobel Prize in physics with John Mather of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for their work on the cosmic microwave background, whose existence supports the big bang theory.
