2. Electronic Transaction
The electronic transaction should be rapid and not require contact between the equipment and the moving vehicles. Systems in use today consist of microwave tags (DSRC). The tag establishes a bidirectional wireless communication so that the necessary information can be exchanged to complete the transaction. Usually the tag contains the identity of a bank account or credit card. An alternative, in use today with heavy trucks, is based on a satellite positioning system. The vehicle carries a system that detects its movement and position based on satellite technology, such as GPS or, in the future, Galileo. The system contains a series of toll points, and each time a vehicle passes thesethose points, a monetary transaction takes place, either within the system or at a centralized location.
