User Interface/Digital Designer

MIT's Technology Review (www.technologyreview.com) seeks a User Interface/Digital Designer with a proven track record designing modern content-centric experiences for web and connected devices.

This is a position for a full-time digital designer who:

  • Creates user interfaces for our websites, mobile sites, apps, and other connected devices
  • Works on MIT, Technology Review, and 2-3 other media/content-oriented brands within the global MIT ecosystem
  • Is based out of our Kendal Sq. offices
  • And is part of a cross-functional digital product team that includes engineers, product managers, project managers, analytics managers, and marketing designers

Who are we?
We are MIT employees working on key media/content brands (primarily Technology Review – www.technologyreview.com).

We create MIT-quality content, conferences, events, and membership experiences for a global audience. We are a global, prestigious brand. Our digital products/user experiences do not reflect this... yet.

Our digital products consist of nearly 100 websites, mobile sites, apps, etc. across 5 global brands. We work in numerous languages with local editions/partners in key markets (and more to come in next 12 months).

All of these digital products are slated for a complete rebuild.

They will be built on MIT-quality technology with a modern design. We will be rebuilding at the speed of a media company.

Who are we looking for?
This is not "another in-house design role."

We need someone who is:

  • A talented digital designer with 4+ years of industry experience (most likely from an agency)
  • Detail-oriented, production-minded user interface designer with the chops to design for web, mobile, and other connected devices
  • Excited by our current rebuilding phase and is inspired by the amazing potential to make our design and digital experiences stand-out on a global stage
  • "Tech curious" with hands-on familiarity with web tech/standards (e.g., HTML5, CSS, jQuery) and publishing platforms (e.g. Wordpress, Drupal, Expression Engine)
  • Looking at sites like GOOD.is and theVerge.com; apps like Flipboard and AOL Editions; microsites like Sony's tablet; and thinks "I can do even better than that."

Why work here?

  • We believe that great interface/digital design will drive our next phase of exponential growth
  • We are rebuilding everything – all of our digital products are being revisited, refreshed, and modernized
  • We have a strong software engineering team already in place (so cutting edge/modern designs will be developed to MIT-level technical specifications)
  • Our team members are "digital natives" at the intersection of technology, media, and design (we have agency and/or media backgrounds)
  • We offer outstanding benefits (3 weeks vacation to start, 4 weeks after one year, rollover up to 40 days; 5% 401(k) matching plus an additional 5% into a pension; reimbursed MIT classes; and on and on)
