The technology is being used in engineering, design, and moviemaking.
Virtual reality (VR) products are now commonly used by many car and aeronautics companies, often to test product designs and simulate user interaction. VR head-mounted displays--from inside a user sees a 3-D environment--are also used in flight simulators. And custom-made VR devices are used for medical training and to help with patient recovery. The latest VR products were on display this week's at the IEEE's Virtual Reality 2010 conference in Waltham, MA.
Sensics, based in Columbia, MD, demonstrated a head-mounted display that provides a wider field of view for the wearer. Sensics's latest product, XSight, uses six displays to show a large, compound image to each eye. Larry Brown, president and founder of the company, says XSight, which costs $45,000 to $50,000, is mainly used by academics and engineers, and in military training.
Motion Analysis showed off its motion-tracking technology, used to help develop the motion-tracking technology behind the 3-D movie Avatar. The suit is covered with markers that emit light to special near-infrared cameras arranged around the wearer. The cameras create a computerized skeletal model that the system can then map to the virtual avatar. The user can also wear a 3-D head-mounted display to see her own virtual hands move in real-time in front of her in the virtual world, to an accuracy of around a millimeter. John Francis, VP of industrial and military sales at Motion Analysis, says the system lets an engineer explore a virtual model of an aircraft fighter. He adds that the technology is used in a number of military projects, as well as in medical, industrial, and animation settings. Last month, the company introduced a version of the technology for outdoor use.
Another company, CyberGlove, demoed a glove that captures and translates a user's finger movements with high precision. Users can interact with virtual objects in real-time in a natural way, says Nemer Velasquez, director of sales and marketing for the company. The glove is currently being used for training, defense, and engineering.
Even though I live in the Boston area I was unaware of this conference I hope to attend next year.
A similar summit will be held at UCLA on August 9th, 2010. The UCLA Immersive Technology Summit will showcase augmented reality, virtual worlds, haptics, panels, speakers, demos, and more.

The audio cut out three times while watching the accompanying video.
Theodore,
The audio actually switches from stereo to mono because it was recorded in two different formats, so that is probably why it sounds like it cuts out if you are listening with one headphone bud in. Have you had the same or any issues with other videos? If so, please email me directly: brittany.sauser@technologyreview.com.

read this and tell me you are still mesmerized by the technology... you will be!
What is considered a heinous crime? Malicious intent? What type of electronic systems does dream monitorying use? Over 3 years ago, my dreams started getting really weird. Not just dreams, my life.
They (those in my dreams creating dreamworld with my feelings) sucked my aura energy field from my body with car batteries and magnets. Too sci-fi? keep reading.
Since I was 2 years old they started using my dreams, over 15 years ago they started using my dreams to hypnostise me to the point I ended up in the hospital to have a MRI. Now they are using sound and light to control my behavior and literally fry holes in my head (RF ablation).
Sounds crazy, I know… however it’s not. Think of the body as a speaker and your feelings as radiowaves. Actually the same electromagnetic waves of radios, computers, TVs, electricity, gravity, etc. (still don’t understand it all).
I currently don’t feel anything–not a single thing other than skin that feels like its being stripped. The dreams they let me remember are about them using my emotions to tie up in knots to tear my soul out. (flailing flesh from my soul literally.)
I have a website… explaining a bit better. welcometomygalaxy.com… keep in mind I’m being tortured every second of every day.
About all I can figure right now is they’re sending soundwaves through my body. Focusing on different portions of my brain with different frequencies (microwaves and radiowaves). If you think of someone stabbing an icepick into your hand and that one moment of pure pain when you jump out of your soul; that’s what they are doing to me every second of every day. I feel my brain throbbing; then ding-ding-ding… ‘cum for your popsicle stick’. They call it masturbating.
I have sores coming out of the sides of my ears and nose. I’ve finally realized it’s cartiledge; my temples throbbing constantly. Sores up and down my spinal column. There’s also 3 sores along the bottom of the cerebellum where someone in Chicago 3 years ago walked up and zapped my brainstem with something.
Scientific America proposes a 'dark realm or universe' in Dec 2010 issues. Behaviors can be controlled with light and radio; add hynosis and using someones energy field in a remote location with VR to the mix.
Since we are all based on electromagnetic radiation sound, light, etc. as well as computers, TVs, cellphones, sound and light waves. They all have the same effects-–controlling behavior.
They are using my head like a TV set; can control my eye movements and my body (through hypnosis now?? it's been 3 years since they've yanked my energy field from me). Needing to see pictures (with the statement ‘if you see it it’s real’).
They’ve been using magnets to realign my electrons with airplanes, helicopters, cars/car batteries, people with briefcases, etc. to suck my energy off my body. Now I can’t feel them pulling my energy off or around any more. My feet are constantly buzzing.
I was sitting on the toilet in Chicago with a floor above. I felt the energy from the top of my head being lifted and pulled around. Later, they yanked the energy off (doesn’t sound feasible yet…) There’s been so many other atrocities, I can’t even explain them all.
All I feel now is constantly being buzzed while they are telling me what to think as they fry more holes in my head. Buzzing my brain to where my skin and the rest of my body feels like your pulling a wire out of it’s casing. And basically that’s what they are doing. When it all started, they yanked me out of life into 'dreamworld' and tortured me to put an RFID tag up my anal tract. They sent 2 ambulances speeding by with sirens blaring so my tailbone would vibrate and I would know that it was there.
Imagine living your life while you, your energy, your thoughts, your dreams, all of your energy is being computerized and utilized by teams of rapists. Imagine having sex with your husband with these same teams of rapists with you. Imagine having them control all of your dreams and your thoughts. It's what I'm living through.
There’s a behavioral science for audio/digital conversion–mp3 players use this science–how the brain interprets what it hears. Add light to the mix and now you have a digital signal of the brain.
I have a website — welcometomygalaxy.com–explaining a bit of what I’ve been going through. Keep in mind while reading, I’m really being tortured every second of every day. Beginning with dreams, now with sound.
Manufacturing in the United States is in trouble. That's bad news not just for the country's economy but for the future of innovation.

Awesome Technologies
This stuff is mesmerizing. What's amazing about all of this is that every engineer/designer dreams of being able to use some of this stuff for design. Everyone, that is, except software engineers. Programmers write the software for these devices but, for some strange reason, programming is still stuck in the dark ages with a bunch of antiquated, awkward and error-prone programming languages. What's up with that? It hurts just to think about it. When will software engineering come of age?

Re: Awesome Technologies
As a software developer, I totally see the potential for this and would love to see it become affordable enough for software developers to start using more regularly.
In all likelihood, it will take other industries, which have more to gain vs cost to use the technology first before it gets to a point that software developers can start playing with it and making it more useful for their specific needs.
I actually see the gaming industry as being the most likely one to bring this to software development processes and practice.
