"No entailing laws, but enablement..."

288 word abstract. Good work can be summarized on a cocktail napkin with a swizzle stick. Positive feedback defeats calculus when unlimited magnification does not smooth a trajectory, hence numerical solutions. Infinitely seed-sensitive output is academically elegant, and unpredictive (e.g., economics and string theory).

"the universe is grossly non-ergodic" But it empirically is! An ergodic state is aperiodic but positive recurrent. Sensory organs doing the same task repeatedly independently evolved across phyla. Sometimes tolerences average - components of an electrical circuit. Sometimes tolerences feed on each other - thermonuclear fusion. The former generally gives determinate solutions, the latter generally does not.

"In this paper we study an abstract scenario for the development of global crises"

Model 1: Saturn V booster. Limited ability required design as independent modules with interface common rules. A defective module could not propagate. Repair or swap.

Model 2: Space Scuttle. Supercomputer CAD-designed as one integrated piece. A sea gull crapping on the top would require contingent redesign of the entire entity.

Query: Globalized outsourced integrated just-in-time economy. That is a Model 2. If anybody screws up, everybody gets screwed. Hegemony is then ability to deny, not ability to produce. As with Welfare and Jerry's Kids, all players seek to be the worst catastrophe.

And? when in pelphase, embrace the gospel of spreading liability/risk at expense of efficiency and satisfying the actual requirements. No one gives two shits if the product doesn't actually work as advertised (or at all) as long as you have 'the process' to blame.

Yes, the greater the international trade, the more players any one mistake effects.

However, it also means that the entire world is available to fix those mistakes. If my supplier in Canada cannot make a delivery date, maybe a new supplier in Thailand can.

Competition creates incentive to minimize such disruptions, while risks are further flattened through contractual obligation. Any disruption is both a difficulty for established firms, and an opportunity for the entrepreneur. The more "global" the web of trade, the more opportunities there are for someone with a "better idea" to step in and make a profit by solving a problem.

Religion vs science

The first arxiv paper, "No Entailing Laws, But Enablement In The Evolution Of The Biosphere", is but a continuation of co-author http://www.amazon.com/reinventing-sacred-science-reason-religion/dp/0465003001

You can read it, but note that biology is based on a causal stochastic and deterministic process of evolution which has many philosophically 'entailing' laws (of, say, population genetics). As biology, the theoretical biologist ideas of Kauffman espoused here are weird and non-applicable. As a basis for a creationist sermon, I would guess it does just fine. (Layman here, but with an astrobiology interest.)

The last arxiv paper, "Supersolids: What And Where Are They?", seems very informative on supersolids and what type of system they form.
