Awesome selection of tidbits for our perusal...

about 296264 cells will fit inside a 500 micro-meter diameter sphere -- you NEED to be reminded of that every once in awhile. But "Emergent Properties of Tumor Microenvironments" in cancerous spheroid simulations is productive and thought-provoking; the concept of having enough detailed knowledge of cellular processes to attempt to simulate cancerous behaviors is a little boggling.

"How to Weigh a Star using a Moon" struck me as "Oh. Well, okay -- so?" Kinda like having more data than unknown variables, so "Of COURSE it was Colonel Mustard in the Library with a lead pipe"... Although hypothesizing about the composition of a moon based on "everything we can figure out through a telescope" seems a leeetle bit of a stretch.

"Flat Zipper-Unfolding Pairs for Platonic Solids" made me want to get out my scissors and glue stick -- but then I have a mobile floating over my head assembled with about 6300 pieces of construction paper and Elmer's glue, so "been there, done that"; I can resist temptation. Mostly.

"Artificial Photosynthetic Reaction Centers" etc gets my vote for the absolutely best math (down in the appendices in particular) and graphs -- they even used the words eigenstates and eigenenergies correctly. Learned some things.

The "GPS Grid" correction model didn't do as much for me (I rarely cruise around the Yangtse River Delta region), although I found it interesting that weirdness occurs at specific times of year (in the equinoxes, the "semiannual anomaly"), and that during ionospheric storms your position errors can exceed 100 meters.

AND "Last but not least" is totally useful, in several different ways -- Are you aware that there are SEVERAL different arXiv concentrations available for perusal?? These include "High Energy Physics - Theory" (hep-th), "High Energy Physics - Phenomenology" (hep-ph), "Astrophysics" (astro-ph), not to mention generic mathematics, computer science, and condensed matter subject areas... NOT sure what to think about "premature submission effect -- submitters with bad aim", though... But the references to other online resources for discussion and following current papers, THOSE are useful.

"Mmm, new high-tech discussion forums! Yummy!"

(We've tried cheese, and peanut butter, but our little furry cranks just won't take THAT bait. Let's see whether new potential converts might lure 'em away, eh? Although I've found traces of at least one, going back several years -- destructive little parasite -- across several other "smart enough not to pay any attention" websites)

Light harvesting

Fluorescent dye-doped Plexiglas slabs are solar concentrators. Unfocused light enters the broad face. Internally emitted light is confined by total internal reflection to exit the narrow edges covered with bonded solar cells. A surface loss cone is defined by refractive index (narrower loss cone from larger RI). A meter square slab 1 cm thick had an amplification (before losses) of

(100 cm)^2/(4)(1 cm)(100 cm) = 25

The metric is length divided by 4x thickness. Heat from frequency down-conversion is deposited in the slab not in the solar cells (whose performance plunges with increasing temperature). Solar cell area is expensive, Plexiglas is cheap.

Obtaining a spectral span of fluorescent dyes that 90% survive desert sunlight for 20 years is something of a challenge. It can be done. Surface refractive index can be diddled high from the core (lower internal reflection loses) and low from the top (lower incoming reflection losses.). The big problem is excess energy in 350nm to 550 nm light. Silicon promotes in the deep red to near IR. Barring photon splitting, a lot of incoming solar energy is discarded as heat.

Organic phtosynthesis models are mechanistically much better but are completely unsurvivable. They are not anywhere near commercial. Folks are missing a beat for the survivability.

Have you been watching ongoing developments re "plasmons"?? I've seen some interesting stuff with gold nano-spheres, but I don't specifically recall anything about fluorescence effects. Have to dig around... I assume metal complexes probably survive desert sunlight better than pigment molecules. THAT would be a nice (and productive) synthesis.
