Better dreams

A face-fused cubane oligomer with all carbons inverted is silly at face value. It would be a high explosive for all the strain/carbon. Let's be nanotube naughty in things achievable. The carbon skeleton monomers must be decorated with sidearms (PEO, PPO, mere -(CH2)nCH3) for solubility. That's small stuff. Conceptualize! Why dream in theory when we can dream then synthesize in practice?

1) Poly(para-phenylene). A rigidly flat-aligned, therefore fully conjugated after charge doping, polymer might be a high temperature superconductor. Triptycene is a trivial undergrad prep from anthracene and benzyne generated in situ. 9,9'-bianthracene obtains bitriptycene. 9,9'-dibromo-10,10'-bianthracene goes to alpha,omega-bromine terminated dimer that will polymerize in a Wurtz-type coupling. The magic happens with FeCl3/CH3NO2 oxidative aromatic coupling driven by steric hindrance, 2ArH --> Ar-Ar (e.g., hexaphenylbenzene to the coronene). Polymerize in both directions,

Do you by chance have some means of generating those stereo-pairs, or are you collecting images from a publicly-accessible resource, or...?

Your poly(para-phenylene) would appear to be a least-energy equivalent to the 120-degree merge-angle requirement between three bubbles, where four of these long-chain molecules would form a shared-wall triplet "tube", or twelve of them would form a shared-wall "seven-tube" strand.

IF it were somehow possible to axially "grow" these (like spinning a spider web; gets away from dealing with splice-discontinuities) we COULD conceivably see hexagonally-packed shared-wall nanotubes with an almost-unbelievable tensile strength...

Your item 2: I thought lonsdaleite was quite a challenge because no synthesis IS available (except for meteoric impacts, which create small quantities with significant impurities)...

Your item 3: the darned thing looks like a tripartite spiral staircase (three stairways around a relatively spindly core). Doesn't appear it would have much tensile strength at all -- unless the "hydrogens and pi-bonds omitted for clarity" provide some structural continuity vertically between "stair steps", or horizontally between adjacent "stairs". How well would this embed in a support matrix of some type without losing its desirable characteristics??

I see these various structures and contemplate what kinds of nano-machines would be most useful soonest -- and I'm reminded of the RonCo "Sold Only on TV" sock-maker, where you turn a crank and yarn is laid down in a continuous "tube", forming loops that the next pass links in to, and so on...

HyperChem Lite ver 3, cheap! Rough out the molecule's skeleton in 3-D, "add hydrogens," "assign types," "geometry optimization" to 1e-020 kcal/A-mole, 32,000 iterations with screen update/ 100 iterations. 32K is overkill but under 5 minutes for 32-deck lonsdaleite. Stereo and display options from menu, fractional second. Massage image with Paint Shop Pro. Intel I7 975, 12 GB DDR3 1333 RAM, six fans.

Tripartite poly(para-phenylene) is a nice advanced undergrad summer project. Cute molecule - and remember side chains for solubility.

The ariv paper does not pursue a sound theoretical basis (is bursting full of crap) re the face-sharing cubane polymer,

Cubane itself comes in at 253.099 kcal/mole enthalpy of formation or 31.64 kcal/carbon. That's 1/4 of a C-C bond of strain. The 8-deck polycubane pictured is 1746.582 kcal/mole, 54.58 kcal/carbon strain. 16 decks is 3691.637 kcal/mole or 57.68 kcal/carbon. Not firetrucking likely.

High molecular weight 1-D lonsdaleite is damned for requiring accurate connection of every triplet R-C#C-H to R-C#C-C#C-R. The dimer, obtaining four decks, is plausible. One would be greatly interested in its vacuum work function. Cubic diamonoid hydrocarbons have negative workfunctions.

One could start with mere benzil as model synthesis, then pyrene, then decacyclene (wild and crazy singlet-triplet conversion). "Confabulation AI"? Interesting... Tell us more about this dream of yours. Does this mean that he passed his Turing test, or that you didn't??

The implication is that you haven't been able to follow what he's saying. Which isn't too surprising, but your judgment doesn't reflect poorly on HIM. Because everything HE has been saying checks out, with just a little bit of digging. He's even providing journal references in support of the more convoluted harder bits (in case you missed those). And he drags in peripheral stuff which enhances the overall content of the discussion -- indicating that he's not operating out on some limb, precariously, but that he is comfortably ensconced "in a familiar place" picking and choosing meaningful references supporting a well-grasped context.

Not that everyone is going to be deeply into the same range of contexts, but you would be better off figuring out how to move from where YOU are (usually out on limbs) to some place similar to where he is (competently comfortable, if sometimes aggravated by cavorting monkeys) before the chance escapes you and you find yourself looking back at LIFE as "an opportunity missed"...

Neurocognitive signatures?? Had to laugh...

One of their conclusions appears to be that they can scientifically detect Liberals (after categorizing response patterns across a spectrum of political affiliations). Even better, though, in terms of productive uses of their research, is that they can detect (and recommend treatment for) the cognitive dissonance associated with espousing ONE political affiliation while subconsciously leaning toward a DIFFERENT political belief system.

Finally, a technological "Esprit De Corps" evaluation system -- although I believe "in the old days" these were more usually addressed as "Master Sergeant!", or maybe "Gunny" (but never as "Sir!" -- THESE guys WORK for a living)...

Their "spectrum of cognitive styles with respect to the differential handling of novel or corroborating information" (another way of describing a "good old boy" (etc) opinion and/or gossip network?) seems to deserve a look...

Should we question that the standard might be biased? Why did that species of butterfly die off?

(Silly is as silly does.) Btw, can anyone tell us why survival of the fittest leads to a dead end as much as protection of the weakest? We can only hope some "good" rna survives to a later generation but then I guess I am biased.

Since I'm drawing a blank on pretty much ALL the "key words" in your comment (and can't track down what (of the subjects above, or maybe today's news?) your comment is referencing)...

"Survival of the fittest" doesn't "dead-end", exactly, but it doesn't handle a socio-cultural transition to an "ecology of Mind" particularly well. I seem to recall some learned scribble postulating that human beings didn't "kick into high gear" (bypassing simple biological evolution as waay too slow) until they started preserving, and seeing the value of, old people. Grandparents in particular, but "experienced" oldsters in general, contributed both simple childcare and "lessons learned", as well as the beginnings of story-telling, mythos, and "culture".

Although some people think "culture" and visualise ballet or theater performances, I tend to visualize sourdough starter for making bread. Survival tricks. Places you can't get to by starting anywhere familiar.

I've liked the phrase "Husserlian eidetic reduction" since the first time I saw it, although what it evokes ("transcendent" [other] versus "immanent" [self] perceptions) is torturous and can leave you wandering lost out in left field somewhere, mumbling about "the study of structures of consciousness as experienced from the first-person point of view."

And since now we're back OUT in left field, I have to ask:

Butterflies? "Good" RNA?? Is it silly yet???

Survival of the fittest means as it says, if a branch of evolution dies it is not the fittest for those conditions.

Protecting the weakest is just another evolutionary trait subject to the conditions of life like any other. Life doesnt take sides, all it does is provide a winner and loser to a selection of variables best suited to a condition.

Side note: It is understood that invitro fertilisation does enable (some small amount of) these old codings/traits to re-emerge because of damage involved in the process.

An interesting point for you: Evolution is very modular so the fact our heads and brains are getting bigger and changing shape shouldnt be news to you. It is believed the front teeth will gradually become more dominant as our expanding head grows bigger and moves more up and backwards.

I like the recent discovery of changing snails into slugs(the latest evolution of snails) with palladium, perhaps mimicing the modular change that the species went through.

1)Close, but simplistic.

2)Sure, but ignores the fact that it's an emergent property which extends "evolutionary" effects outside of a single organism.

3)Incorrect, and maybe actually egregious.

4)It IS news to me, since that "information" is contradicted by recent AND current studies. AND by the fact that nobody is reporting (or predicting) any "evolution-related" increase in C-section deliveries.

5)Changing snails into slugs with palladium (cough). Are they still able to reproduce? Is this change carried forward? Don't you feel threatened??
