Lense-Thirring by laser gyro
Gravity Probe B sought to measure both de Sitter precession (geodetic effect; easy) and Lense-Thirring precession (frame dragging; difficult). Gravity Probe B was dinged by supercon patch potentials.

Ironically, William Fairbanks (also at Stanford) was quite the expert on nulling patch potentials (copper plating).
The laser experiment is wonderful! It needs a stable home. America is rich with abandoned underground missile silos buried in quiet hinterlands. Washington State has abandoned Larson Air Force Base in Adams County, near the town of Moses Lake. Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota had 150 underground missile silos plus 15 launch control centers scattered over 13,500 square miles. Wamego, Kansas is also planted with abandoned missile silos.
