Heating water through a hot surface can spall off microparticles then to act as crystallization nuclei. Two flame-polished vitreous containers, one microwave heated, provide a more innocent pair of initial circumstances. A pair of Pyrex tubes parallel loaded with degassed water transfer through a vacuum line, then flamed off, remove a wealth of subtle differential variables.
The trick is providing a consistent continuous phase transition trigger so the two tubes do not ridiculously supercool to -40 C. Themodynamics proposes, kinetics disposes.
