Hinshaw also says that an advanced degree should be consistent with the technical level a person wants to achieve. For instance, he says doctorates are highly recommended in research and early development.

Though Hinshaw had to work continuously for his tuition, he says today's students have more options.

“The academic world has changed since I was in school, and now many schools offer great financing packages for applicants who have achieved success academically or otherwise,” he says. “For both undergraduate and graduate school, the return on investment is fairly unambiguous.”
